ROWmakers final meeting – 13 December

December 12, 2017 | Posted in member activity, Row-by-row Challenge | By

Next meeting is on Wednesday 13 December, 10am for a 10.30am start, in the CQ room at the Cook Community Hub. It is followed by a drop-in, until 4pm. So you can stay all day to sew.

This is our final meeting of the year – maybe we shall see some finished quilts or tops…

We will discuss the plans for 2018 and have morning tea. If you wish, please bring a small plate of food to share.

A quilt is made over the year by each member making their own rows, or blocks or items like bags. A list of ingredients is released at the beginning of the year and at each meeting two items are chosen to incorporate into that month’s design challenge. One will be a colour and one will be an additive. For instance- each row contains two “ingredients”, e.g. purple and geometry, but in whatever way the maker chooses. As the name shows, this can be a noisy group!

This is the list for the year:

# Colours Additives Inspirations
1 Turquoise Paints/ pencils/ dyes/ ink Letters
2 Red Recycled/ leftovers/ found objects Earth, water, fire and air
3 Purple Geometry Celebrations
4 Yellow Threads/ Stitches Opposites
5 Green Embellishments Animal, vegetable, mineral
6 Pink Linen / silk/ lace Heritage, tradition
7 Neutral Print/ words Numbers
8 Orange Improvisation Home and family
9 Blue Vintage Places

(Remember that you can choose an INSPIRATION for the whole year or be inspired by what’s chosen on a month-by-month basis. Up to you.)

Here are some images from our last meeting on 8 November. Some are finished quilts!

ROWmakers design group

April 2, 2017 | Posted in member activity, Row-by-row Challenge | By

The first round responses have been revealed (images below) and the choices for the second round have been made.  Some members have chosen to go with blocks, others back to rows and Liz H is making drainage bags for breast cancer patients,

Next meeting is on 12 April, 10am for a 10.30am start. Here is a message from convenor Joanne:

This month’s Ingredients should have something for everyone (we’ve had a lot trickier in the past).

Remember that everything is to be interpreted FLEXIBLY – particularly COLOUR. Otherwise it gets too difficult. If you think it’s red, then it’s definitely RED. Colour, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

  •      COLOUR – 6. TURQUOISE (Wendy Hirst)
  •      ADDITIVE – 3. PAINTS/PENCILS/DYES/INK (Beres Senden)
  •      INSPIRATION – 9. LETTERS (Uta Maish)

  •      COLOUR – 1. RED(Elaine Wilson)
  •      INSPIRATION – 4. EARTH, WATER, FIRE and AIR (Di Ballantyne)

(Remember that you can choose an INSPIRATION for the whole year or be inspired by what’s chosen on a month-by-month basis. Up to you.)

This year Liz H is making drainage bags – in support of breast cancer patients.

Beginners’ Group Meeting – evening 14 December

December 13, 2016 | Posted in member activity | By

Canberra Quilters has started a Beginners Interest Group to help those new to patchwork to develop their skills. It is aimed at quilters who have done a beginners course and want to move on to something else. The first meeting was on the 3rd Wednesday evening in November, and the third Wednesday evening will be the regular time slot. For December it will be on 14 December, starting at 7.30pm.

This time the demonstration & try out will be about English Paper Piecing (EPP), lead by Patricia Butron and Anne Eccleston. Patricia will provide the pre-cut papers. Participants need to bring fabric scraps (at least 4″/ 10cm square), pencil, pins, scissors, needle and thread. QFO have donated some of their excess fabric to help the beginners achieve some fabric variety.

Elizabeth Scroope will be demonstrating binding a quilt, using a QFO quilt. This is a demonstration only.

ROWmakers reveal- round 9

November 22, 2016 | Posted in member activity, Row-by-row Challenge | By

ROWmakers is a group of members who meet monthly to participate in a year-long design challenge- resulting in a quilt at the end of the year. It started with a row-style quilt in 2011, but has since evolved into anything goes. The basic principle is that each month’s ingredients are incorporated.

The reveal of the round 9 responses occurred on 9 November. This was the final round and some people already had quilt tops and quilts for display.

The Christmas meeting will be on 14 December. To go into the draw for a voucher from one of Canberra Quilters’ sponsors, KimoYES, you need to bring this year’s quilt top (or completed quilt for the ambitious!). For those two members who made Blankets of Love, they will go into the draw even if their work has been handed over.

For a Christmas swap, please bring a piece of fabric 10″ square or a fat eighth, with some co-ordinating bits and pieces. These could include buttons and beads or strips and scraps. Place it all in a brown paper bag and go into the draw! Make something out of your luckydip bag to reveal at the first meeting of 2017 on Feb 8.

Please bring a small plate of food to share at the Christmas morning tea on 14 December.

Here are the reveals from 9 November:

Jill’s quilt is well advanced

Liz’s quilt needs a border!

Karin’s block 9, quilt as you go method

Kay decided to start again!

Heather continues her black, white and brights

First Wednesday drop-in- 5 October- special demo

September 30, 2016 | Posted in member activity | By

At the first Wednesday drop-in on 5 October, member Jakki Cashman will be demonstrating quilting on a domestic machine using Westalee rulers. Jakki has previous demonstrated this at an evening drop-in and was asked for a repeat at one of the daytime drop-ins.

Rulers have been used for a quite a while on long arm machines but a recent innovation has been their use on domestic machines. Westalee (an Australian company) has developed a sewing machine foot and sets of rulers to use with this method of machine quilting.

The drop-in runs all day, from 10am until 4pm, the demo will be in the morning, from 10am.

If you want to have a try and already have the foot and the rulers Jakki has suggested you bring a fat quarter quilt sandwich, your machine, foot and rulers.
