The 2025 Annual Exhibition will be held from 19 – 22 June 2025 at the Budawang Building, EPIC and held in conjunction with and support from Craft Alive

2025 CATERGORIES

1Challenge QuiltIn response to the challenge theme, ‘Crossing the Line’, the quilt must measure 70 cm x 50 cm, with a 1 cm tolerance and may be landscape or portrait orientation.   
Unless specifically included as eligible for another prize or award (Novice Award or Viewers’ Choice Award), a Challenge Quilt may not be considered for any other prize/award. 
All entries must be accompanied by an Artist Statement which supports the theme.
2Tiny TreasureA quilt with no side larger than 35 cm, with a maximum perimeter of 140 cm.  
Unless specifically included as eligible for another prize or award (Novice Award or Viewers’ Choice Award), a Tiny Treasure Quilt may not be considered for any other prize/award. 
3Creative ClothingAn item of adult clothing that incorporates at least two of the following techniques:  patchwork, appliqué, or quilting. It may also include other creative manipulation and embellishment.  A member may enter up to two items. 
Unless specifically included as eligible for another prize or award (Novice Award or Viewers’ Choice Award), an item of Creative Clothing may not be considered for any other prize/award. 
Artist Statements must include the techniques used and reference details of any commercially available pattern used.
4Display OnlyIf you do not want your quilt or item of wearable art to be judged, it must still conform to all relevant conditions of entry, including an Artist Statement with the attribution details. 
This is the Category to select for any quilts if you have already entered two for judging in addition to the Challenge Quilt, Tiny Treasure and Creative Clothing.  Quilts made from kits or blocks of the month where the fabric has been provided with the pattern must be entered in this Category and will not be judged for either category prizes or special awards.  
5Group QuiltThree or more people must have constructed the quilt, and at least one of the makers must be a Canberra Quilters Inc. member.  The quilting may be done by a commercial quilter, as long as that person is a member of the group and received no payment for the work.  Maximum size 260 cm length or width.  
6Commercially QuiltedUnless entered in Category 4:  For Display Only, any quilt made by a member and quilted by a commercial quilter must be entered in this Category.  Maximum size 260 cm length or width.  
7Art QuiltMust be an original design, not a copy or a variation on the original design of another artist working in any medium, unless copyright approval has been granted. 

The quilt should evoke an intellectual or emotional response from the viewer.  The quilt may be of abstract or figurative design with an edge finish to suit the quilt.  
The quilt must meet the definition of an art quilt, and may be in made in the form of –
Mixed Media – may include materials other than fabric and must include some mixed techniques, such as print, embroidery, embellishment, painting, dyeing, fibre manipulation and/or trapunto.  It must comprise at least 50% fabric.
Pictorial – may depict a person, place or thing as a recognizable image such as a still life, wildlife, animals, landscape, cityscape, seascape, portrait and figures. It may include any technique including mixed media.
Abstract – features cutting-edge and non-literal art quilts with an emphasis on colour, line and design.  It may include any technique including mixed media.
Maximum size of any quilt – 260 cm length or width, quilts in this category may be a minimum of two layers held together with stitching.
Artist Statements should outline the techniques used to support the artistic intention of the work.
8Modern QuiltModern Quilts will be judged for a strong visual impact rather than perfection.  They are inspired by modern design and ideas.  
Characteristics may include but are not limited to; the use of bold colours and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid colour, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space incorporated into the design, asymmetric design, a reinterpretation of traditional blocks, or the lack of a visible block structure.  
Quilts should be machine or hand quilted in a way that is sympathetic to the design
Maximum size of any quilt – 260 cm length or width.  
Artist Statements should provide support to the inclusion of the quilt into the Modern Category and detail the characteristics of modern quilting which have been included.
9Large Quilt (Amateur)Minimum size 150 cm length or width, maximum size 260 cm length or width, with a 1 cm tolerance.  
10Small Quilt (Amateur)Maximum size 150 cm length or width, with a 1 cm tolerance.  
11Large Quilt (Professional)Minimum size 150 cm length or width, maximum size 260 cm length or width, with a 1 cm tolerance.  
12Small Quilt (Professional)Maximum size 150 cm length or width, with a 1 cm tolerance.  
13Quilts by Children (up to Year 6)Children up to Year 6 may enter up to three quilts each in this category but must indicate order of hanging preference on the entry form.  Siblings may enter a joint quilt.  Maximum size 260 cm length or width.  
14Quilts by Youth (up to Year 12)Youth attending secondary school/college may enter up to three quilts each in this category but must indicate order of hanging preference on the entry form. Siblings may enter a joint quilt.  Maximum size 260 cm length or width.
