The next meeting is this Wednesday, 20 February, in the Hall at the Cook Community Hub, from 9.30am until 12.30pm. It is followed by a drop-in at the Canberra Quilters room. The library is open for the first half of the drop-in.

This drop-in is also when the Appliqué Group meets. The Appliqué Group is for members who like to do appliqué – learning from each other, getting help or working on a current project. You don’t have to be part of this group to come to the drop-in.

MEMEBERSHIP REMINDER. Membership fees were due on 1 January. You can join online or at the meeting. You need to be a member to borrow from the library, use the room and its facilities regularly, stand for the committee or exhibit and sell in the exhibition.

The special themed show & tell this month is appliqué items – anything appliqué. Don’t forget to bring something for regular show & tell.

At the February evening meeting the library held its annual fund raising sale. There were some bargains left over and these will be for sale at this meeting.

For new members, Wonderful Wednesday is held on the third Wednesday of each month except December, normally in the Hub Hall from 9.30am till 12.30pm. It is a good opportunity to do some handwork and meet for a chat. We have Raffles, Lucky Door Prize, and Name Badge Draw, some of the most wonderful morning tea fare and a themed Show and Tell plus the regular Show and Tell.

If you are a newcomer or you haven’t been for a while PLEASE come and sit at Christine’s table (WW convener) where ever that may be, until you get better acquainted with the other members.

Modern Quilters meeting – 9 October

October 6, 2014 | Posted in Modern Quilt Group | By

A lot of you have expressed interest in getting a lesson on making perfect needle turned appliqué circles. I’m happy to teach this on Thursday night if you are happy to have me teach it? It might just be a “watch and learn” session, however if you want to get hands on, please bring along the following:

  •  Mylar* template – a circle is great. You can get those packs of circles but the cost is quite prohibitive so only bring if you have them. Otherwise you can buy Mylar* sheets from quilt shops for a couple of dollars. If you bring a Mylar* sheet, also bring a fine permanent marker and a perfect circle shape to trace off (or a compass). Something around the 10 cm mark is perfect to learn on.
  • thread for hand basting
  • Spray starch – I like Crisp because it makes everything smell like summer 😉 Make sure the can has its lid!
  • a small artist’s paintbrush or a couple of cotton ear buds/q-tips
  • A spare piece of cotton fabric – I use cotton duck – to preserve the integrity of the CQ ironing boards (from the starch)
  • fabric for background and fabric for circles.
  • your favourite appliqué needle and thread and usual sewing kit

*it’s important you bring Mylar, and not any old acetate or plastic template sheet. Mylar handles low-medium heat from the iron and won’t warp or melt. The other stuff does (warp and melt)

Please bring show and tell as usual, and anything else you might like to work on if you aren’t doing circles. Meeting starts 7.30.

Cheers

Michelle, Jenny, Gemma and Jan
