Presentation to Common Ground

At last night’s meeting the quilts for Common Ground were presented. Diane Bray and Meredith Hinchliffe were present on behalf of Common Ground to accept the quilts and to thank members of Canberra Quilters for their efforts.

Common Ground Canberra is the national capital’s first low-cost supportive housing initiative focused on providing quality tenant outcomes for people who have experienced chronic homelessness.

Common Ground Canberra targets the most vulnerable chronically homeless people in the community. These are people who have been homeless continuously for six months or more, or who have experience multiple episodes of primary homelessness over a 12 month period. They often have substantial barriers to housing stability such as a disability, mental illness or substance misuse disorder. Common Ground Canberra also targets low-income earners who are unable to access other affordable housing options. (from the Common Ground website)

Canberra Quilters became involved almost two years ago and were asked to produce 40 quilts for the residents. The management of the project came under the Quilts for Others wing of Canberra Quilters.  Members were given size and colour suggestions and donations were called for. All up 64 quilts have been made and donated by Canberra Quilters. At the exhibition in 2014 making quilts for Common Ground was the featured demonstration by Quilts for Others.
