Margaret Armistead was a long-time member of Canberra Quilters who died from breast cancer. Her husband, Allan, set up the award in her memory to encourage quilters to exhibit their work. While he was still alive Dell and Allan set up the Allan Armistead Award to encourage children to exhibit.

The Margaret Armistead Award is presented to a quiltmaker entering a quilt in an exhibition for the first time, anywhere. This year the award went to Melissa Rowe for her quilt In the Light of the Day and the Dark of the Night.  The Allan Armistead Award this year went to Sara Magee for My First Quilt.
