Call for entries 2019

LONG POST – These are coming up in 2019 for members to enter selected exhibitions. Some information is from Janet de Boer’s Fibre Forum e-bulletin.

Here is a rundown of some Australian calls for entry:

Deadline of 5 February 2019 to enter the 2019 AQC (Australasian Quilt Convention) Challenge: the theme is MAGIC; the size is 90cm square. Entries will be judged on design, interpretation of theme and workmanship. A section of finalists will tour the AQC craft events in Australia and New Zealand. Three cash prizes will be awarded: FIRST Prize $3500; Runner-Up $1500 and Viewers’ Choice $500. The AQC annual event is to be held April 11-14, 2019 at the Royal Exhibition Building, Nicholson Street, Carlton Vic (Melbourne). Link to AQC challenge

Also part of AQC, with a deadline of 21 February is the Self Portrait textile art challenge

Deadline of 1st March 2019 to enter the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award 2019 with the award exhibition being held from 1st June – 11th August 2019 at the Wangaratta Art Gallery, Victoria. There is a $10,000 Acquisitive Award. The Wangaratta Art Gallery is proud to present the Contemporary Textile Award, which is a biennial acquisitive award and exhibition celebrating the diversity and strength of Australia’s textile artistry.

Deadline of 30th April to submit work for Stitchy Central – Enter the community exhibition Stitching Through Time – A Celebration of 20 Years which includes a People’s Choice Award (cash prizes) in three categories, Group, Individual and Student. Any textile medium welcome, such as embroidery, knitting, crochet, mixed media, textile books, 2D, 3D, wall hanging, sculpture, rugs, wearable etc. Size limited to under 1.5 M any dimension. Contemporary and Traditional styles welcome.

Deadline of 16 June for Dare to Differ Contemporary Quilt Exhibition.

The Quilters’ Guild of South Australia Inc invites all quilt/textile artists resident in Australia to participate in this selected exhibition at Gallery M – Marion Street, Marion Cultural Centre, Oaklands Park Adelaide. Dare to Differ will be in place from 5-29 September 2019. Submissions should be original, innovative,
predominantly fibre, comprising at least two layers stitched together – not framed or stretched. Online Applications to enter become available from 1st May 2019

Deadline of 17 June for the Modern Quilt Show Australia.

Sydney Modern Quilt Guild and Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild are proud to present the 2019 Modern Quilt Show Australia! After a break in 2018 we’re teaming up to bring you another fabulous show, featuring the best modern quilts in Australia. We’ll be returning to our beautiful venue from 2015 – The Pavilion, Kiama.

Exhibition dates are 16-18 August, which overlaps the Canberra Quilters Members’ Exhibition(15-18 August). An unfortunate clash, but these things happen!

Deadline of 19 September for the AQIPP (Australian Quilts in Public Places) Exhibition. Quilters are invited to demonstrate their talents and originality interpreting the theme “Metamorphosis”. AQIPP is a juried, judged and sponsored exhibition which is open to all quilters in Australia. (Major sponsor: Brother International)

International Quilt Shows:

International Quilt Festival Houston, 31 October – 3 November, 2019

  • SAPPHIRE CELEBRATION CELEBRATING 45 YEARS – Call open now through 19 February, 2019
  • QUILTED COMICS & SCI-FI – 5 January 2019 – Entry forms go live, 9 April 2019  – Deadline for entries
  • FINE CHINA – 4 March , 2019 – Entry forms go live at http://callforentrieschina.com 2 May , 2019 – Deadline for entries

The International Quilt Association runs the judged portion of the International Quilt Festival. Information, rules and entry forms for the 2019 show will be published in the Northern Hemisphere Spring. This is where members Jenny Bowker, Helen Godden and Beth Miller entered their quilts in the 2018 show.

The two websites are very close in name. Quilts.com is the commercial organisation and Quilts.org is the Association mentioned above. Think of quilts.com as like Expertise Events and quilts.org like Canberra Quilters.

 

Festival of Quilts, Birmingham UK, 1-4 August 2019

There are 14 different competition categories planned for the 2019 quilt competition- there are membership constraints. In 2018 there was an open call that allowed non-members to exhibit in a specific category. It is subject to change so check back in early 2019 for the final list.
