Congratulations to Kristina Butron, who was announced as the Shining Light Award recipient at the Australasian Quilt Convention Gala Dinner on 22 April 2017. Kristina is one of our Junior Members and has previously won the Bernina Junior Quiltmaker award at the Members’ Exhibition.

The Shining Light Award is a national award made annually to recognise achievement by a junior quiltmaker.

Get busy and get stitching, and you could have your own quilt or textile art piece on display at Australia’s premier quilting event, admired by thousands of visitors from around the country and further afield.

AQC challenge 2016

Challenge yourself and explore your creativity within a theme in this prestigious annual challenge.

The theme is ‘Tradition with a Twist’ and if selected as a finalist, your quilt will tour Australia and New Zealand throughout the year. A prize pool of $5,500 is up for grabs with winners awarded on interpretation of theme, excellence in design, craftsmanship, and a Viewers’ Choice.

Quilt size is 90cm square.

Mini-Textile Art Challenge: Paws & Whiskers

We invite you to show your best friend in their best light, in textiles!

Traditional and contemporary works using creative textile techniques including patchwork, embroidery, appliqué, surface design, photo transfer, printing, etc, will all be considered. The winner will receive a fabulous Fiskars prize pack valued at more than $200.

The work must have at least two layers and the size is 25cm square.

If you have completed a kaleidoscope quilt and would like to be part of the AQC Quilt Show, send information and an image of your quilt for consideration. This is a non-judged exhibition – our aim is to create a spectacular display of millefiore colour.

Your quilt does not need to be finished for online entry, but if selected for display it must be finished and sent to Expertise Events before March 25, 2016.

Quilt can be any size and does not have to be your original design.

Be a quilt angel – volunteer at AQC

Each Year at the Australian Quilt Convention there is a call for volunteers to help out with the quilt show part of the convention. The volunteers are co-ordinated through Victorian Quilters. Here is their request:

Once again Victorian Quilters Inc., as volunteers, will be co coordinating the roster for “Angel Duty” at AQC. If you would like to spend time chatting with quiltmakers and up close to the amazing quilts on display, then put your name on the list of volunteers and email your details to Archangel, Chris Serong : cserong9@tpg.com.au  with suggested day and time.

The AQC is at the Royal Exhibition Buildings, Nicholson Street, Carlton, Melbourne from Thursday 14 April to Sunday 17 April.

Quilt in banner is the Best of Show from our exhibition last year ( Canzone Rosso by Panela Brockwell). It will be on display at AQC and will tour to the Craft and Quilt Fairs throughout 2016.

Australasian Quilt Convention (AQC) 2016

AQC is over for another year and the organisers have announced the dates for next year: April 14 – 17, 2016; Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton Gardens, Melbourne.

Announcing the theme for the 2016 AQC Challenge: Expertise Events is pleased to advise that the theme will be Tradition with a Twist. Quilters are invited to start creating now – the size will again be 90cm square and entries are judged on interpretation of theme, design and workmanship.

At the 2015 Quilt Convention Gala Dinner a number of awards were bestowed – the National Quilt Award from Bernina went to Linda White for her remarkable creation comprised of 22,500 quarter-inch hexagons.

The Rajah Award was presented to Di Ford-Hall for her enormous contribution to patchwork and quilting over the years. Gwen Parry from WA took out the Lut-Da award for her community quilt-related work and young Isabella Noble from Orange, NSW received the Shining Light award, all sponsored by Expertise Events.

All the quilts considered for the National Quilt Award will tour to each of the Craft and Quilt Shows this year, so members will get to see them at our exhibition 6-9 August, 2015. Also on display will be the 35 finalists(out of 98 entries), from the 2015 AQC Challenge, True Blue.

Australasian Quilt Convention – 16-19 April

Various members have work displayed at the quilt show that is part of the Convention. This includes Rose Lewis with last year’s Best of Show quilt, plus Gemma Jackson, Michelle Law, Bronwyn Hill, Jenny Bowker (quilt in banner of this post)  and Coral Brady. The Anzac quilt made by junior member Ineka Voigt.  Ineka will be going to Gallipoli for the Centenary of Anzac commemorations.

Call for entries – AQC Challenge 2015 “True Blue”

The next Australasian Quilt Convention is in Melbourne 16-19 April 2015. Here are some details about the convention.

As part of the convention there is a quilt challenge. The challenge theme for 2015 is “True Blue”. The size requirement has changed to 90cm square – so think about what you could produce. Entry deadline is 27 February 2015 and there is $5,500 in prizes available.  Further details about the challenge are available here.

Request from Victorian Quilters- AQC volunteers

Canberra Quilters Inc have received a request from the Victorian Quilters Inc for help with volunteers at the Australasian Quilt Convention in April. If you are going, why not consider this?

Information: Helpers are required for the following at the Australasian Quilt Convention April 10-13, 2014 

Venue: Royal Exhibition Building, Rathdowne Street, Carlton, (Melbourne) 

White Glove is a 2 hour shift – 10 – 12, 12 – 2, 2-4

Tutor’s Helper is 8.45 – 5.00 with lunch and morning and afternoon included – duties include handing around class notes, ironing for those who may require extra help, shopping for class participants, chasing up items for the tutor if required and liaising with the Archangel Marg Dietrich.

Both White Glove and Tutor’s Helpers are given complimentary entry – names will be on a list at the main entrance. Photo ID is required and a Guild name badge would be appreciated. 

Victorian Quilters Inc. office is housed in the far right hand corner of the western annexe where the Quilt Exhibition is hung. Marg Dietrich has her area at the entrance to the Office. All White Glove and Tutor’s Helpers report for duty to Marg at this point.
