Small Japanese Projects- 23 March

The next get together of the Small Japanese Projects group is this Wednesday, from 10am until 12 noon. This is followed by the drop-in until 4pm, incorporating the Lucy Boston interest group.

Here is a message from Wendy H, detailing the project you will be working on – a small cicada purse.

At this month’s get together I thought we would talk about how to use all those small scraps of Japanese silks we have been collecting over the years.  So bring your ideas and lots of examples for show & tell. We can use some of these scraps to make a bag in the shape of a cicada (thank you Yvonne).  See mine below.  It is all hand sewn and I did find it a little fiddly but I got there in the end :).  It’s not as quick as the pinecones we made last month so you will have to finish at home (Easter project?)

Measurements: There are 2 sizes : Large, 12cm long x 7cm wide and small, 11cm x 5.5cm.  Seam allowances are not included on pattern pieces.  Need to add 6mm when cutting out.  I chose to make the large size.

Materials needed to make purse include:

  • scraps of at least 4 different silks, more if you want to make the upper body striped.  I think my fabrics are a little dark so you may want to choose some with more contrast.  It can also be made using cottons.
  • Templastic or cardboard to make pattern (or you can use the pattern I have already made)
  • Thread to match fabrics, needles & usual sewing equipment
  • Sandpaper – used to hold slippery silks while tracing pattern – I will bring 2 sandpaper boards
  •  Fabric marking pen, pencil etc
  •  Small amount of batting, stuffing or cotton wool (to stuff eyes)
  • thin cord/ribbon for drawstring (.9m)
  • safety pin

Look forward to seeing those who can make it on Wednesday to make a little cicada purse and share ideas for other projects using silk.
