Small Japanese Projects group meeting 26 September

September 22, 2018 | Posted in Meetings | By

The next meeting of the Small Japanese Projects group is on 26 September, from 10am-noon, in the CQ room at Cook Community Hub.

The Small Japanese Projects interest group is for members interested in all things Japanese. Each month (or over two months) you will work on a small project, lead by a member of the group.

The meeting begins with a show and tell of what you have made, purchased or done during the previous months. It is always great to hear about your activities.

Our project for this month is a folding project bag.  It is only small, 8 1/2 x 8 inches finished but very cute and would be fine for small sashiko or chiku chiku projects as it has enough room for fabric, threads and needles.

If you want to make it bigger it would be very easy.

Requirement List

  • 14 1/2 x 24 inches of feature fabric for outside and handle
  • 10 x 20 inches of wool felt for inside ( I just used some thin batting and coordinating fabric and it worked fine).
  • 4 x 12 inches of fusible web for the handle
  • coordinating sewing thread

Cutting

  • Cut one rectangle 8 1/2 x 17 inches from outside fabric
  • Cut one rectangle 8 1/2 x 17 inches from wool (or batting and fabric) for inside
  • Cut two pieces 6 x 8 inches from feature fabric for the pockets
  • Cut one piece 4 x 12 inches from feature fabric and one from fusible web for handles
  • If you cut out the pieces at home it will save time.

The meeting is followed by a drop-in until 4pm. The English Paper Piecing (EPP) group meets as part of the drop-in.

Rowmakers Design Group

August 17, 2018 | Posted in Meetings, Row-by-row Challenge | By

The ROWmakers is a design group that meets once a month on the second Wednesday, February – December. The purpose of the group is to design and make a unique quilt-related project, over the course of the year, using ingredients drawn at random each month. The full list was published here. (ROW=Rowdy on Wednesday)

The next meeting is on Wednesday 12 September, 10am for a 10.30am start, in the CQ room at the Cook Community Hub. It is followed by a drop-in, until 4pm. So you can stay all day to sew. Because we won’t have a meeting in August there was a double draw of ingredients. The drawing of the letter Z promoted considerable discussion…but there are always zebras, zig-zags and zed words on fabric to choose from!

Here are the ingredients drawn out so far (seven rounds):

# Colours Techniques Alphabet
1 Green Scraps A
2 Blue Tradition with a Twist L
3 Neutral Appliqué P
4 Yellow Piecing U
5 Orange Pre-cuts/strips W
6 Purple Adapt-a-block S
7 Pink Modern quilting Z.

A number of members have chosen to stick with one technique throughout the year, e.g. Scraps, so they disregard what technique is drawn out each month. The adapt-a-block is best illustrated by Yvonne’s quilt from last year. She took one block and came up with many versions through colour and rotation and flipping.

Here are some images that show the responses for round 5 (Orange):

Check out the ‘W’ objects in the background squares!
